Thinking Greener is the college’s own green initiative. It is being launched today, as part of Green Office Week and it is about the college as a whole becoming more aware of the energy we use and working together to reduce it.
Why do we want to start Thinking Greener?
Climate change is one of the major challenges facing the world today. The scale and speed of the change may have an adverse effect on our students, staff, economy, environment and local community and reinforces our commitment to take action.
What are we going to do?
We are going to start Thinking Greener in everything we do. With help from the Carbon Trust we have produced a five year plan to reduce our carbon emissions – our Carbon Management Plan. You can see this on our website at www.sbc.ac.uk/thinkinggreener
What does it involve?
Good housekeeping – we can improve the way we use our buildings and encourage staff and students to save energy.
Invest to save – we are going to make improvements to lighting, insulation, and replace our use of fossil fuels with lower carbon alternatives.
What can I do?
Everyone can play their part in Thinking Greener, from doing small things every day to running larger energy saving projects.
- Turn computers and screens off when they are not in use
- Turn off unused lights
- Only print what you really need to print
- Cycle or use public transport to come in to college
- Think reduce, reuse, recycle
- Run energy saving projects with your peers
What else?
We like to know what you think about saving energy. Complete this 2 minute survey to tell us what you think and you may be one of five people to win a £15 iTunes voucher: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6GJ752M
What will happen next?
In the next few months and in the next academic year, you will start to see Thinking Greener pop up across the college. There will be opportunities to take part in projects, we will be looking for Green Champions and holding energy saving events. Everyone is invited to get involved and start Thinking Greener.
